George Nakashima Mid Century Modern Design Origins Line Eight Drawer Chest

This American mid-century modern design eight drawer chest was designed by George NakashimaGeorge Nakashima
USA [1905 - 1990] 

George Nakashima was born in Spokane, Washington in 1905. A sculptor, architect and woodworker he graduated from M.I.T. with a master's in Architecture in 1930. Nakashima wrote a book describing his experiences and relationship with wood, The Soul of a Tree (1981). In 1983, he designed the impressive “Altar of Peace” installed in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. He designed the ORIGINS line for the Widdicomb Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan and supervised the production of the line. Each piece was marked with his name and dated.

(1905 -1990) ca 1950 for his Origins Line, produced by the Widdicomb Furniture company, Grand Rapids, Michigan. The chest is constructed with east Indian laurel veneers and solid walnut legs. The chest is 72" wide, 22 1/2" deep and 32" high. The top drawer is branded inside "George Nakashima" and has the remains of a cloth Widdicomb Grand Rapids tag. The underside of the drawer is stenciled "10/58" (the date of manufacture), "207" (the model number) and "Sundra". The inset drawer pulls are brass. The chest is in original excellent condition
